MIM (metal injection molding) process, which is a new type of metal part forming process combining modern plastic injection molding process and powder metallurgy. This new process appeared in the late 1970s and was initially mainly used to manufacture light weapons parts. The following introduces several MIM partsfor weapons. This time,I will introduce two other weapon parts.
3. The safety bar of the gun industry
The safety rod of the gun industry, this part weighs 3.5g, is made of MIM process Fe-7%Ni powder, and is sintered to a density of 7.7g per square centimeter. This MIM part is a part of the gun. In view of the economic benefits of MIM, the MIM part is used instead of the part produced by precision casting alloy steel.
The wall thickness near the two holes in the safety bar is 0.3mm. Design experiments with MIM rods show that the size of the gun has not changed after 50,000 times of design.
4. The rotor in the missile warhead safety device
The rotor in the missile warhead safety device. This part is made of 316 stainless steel using MIM technology. This part is the rotor in the “safe and arm” device of the missile warhead. In the warhead, the rotor separates the sensitive detonator in the signal chain from the main explosive.
The mechanical timer engaged with the rotor delays its rotation so that it reaches a safe distance. This kind of rotor is a novel MIM part, the teeth of its hypercycling gear (hypercycling gear) cannot be machined with any standard accurate tool. The shape of the rotor in the missile warhead safety device is very complicated, and there are several holes protruding in different directions. It is estimated that the production cost of cutting this part with conventional materials is about 7 times that of MIM parts.
